On the afternoon of Saturday, November 15, 1884, an international conference was opened by the chancellor of the newly-created German Empire at his official residence on Wilhelmstrasse, in Berlin. Sat around a horseshoe-shaped table in a room overlooking the garden with representatives from every European country, apart from Switzerland, as well as those from the United States and the Ottoman

Known as the "Scramble for Africa," the conference was organized by German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and led to the establishment of European colonies across Africa. The conference was held in Berlin between Nov. 15, 1884 and Nov. 26, 1885. By 1914, Africa had been completely divided into 50 countries among the conference participants.

It marked the highpoint of white European competition for territory in Africa, a process commonly known as the Scramble for Africa. After America's Emancipation of African slavery and it Reconstruction period came a period of European dissonance. The Berlin Conference was held in Berlin, Germany, from November 15, 1884, to February 26, 1885. Among those present at the conference were representatives from call for a conference on Africa in Berlin in 1884. Bismarck's initiative, Kasson believed, would avert 'further strife, and even warlike collisions, in the remarkable struggle now going on between the commercial rival powers for advantages in the African trade.
