TABOO is a Japanese movie set in the middle 1800s. Contact with the Europeans has been made, but Japan’s military government has become even more corrupt. When a handsome, girlish, 17-year-old arrives at an important samurai school, he sets some of the other men’s hearts aflutter, leading to homosexual jealousy among the ranks.

Gohatto’s characters and setting mav be cultural givens, but Oshima, though never mocking his material, by no means plays it straight. 2000-01-01 Instead Gohatto is a confusing and often boring examination of forbidden love among 19th century samurai.New recruit Kano (Ryuhei Matsuda) has a pure, androgynous beauty that has a disruptive 2001-08-03 Review: In many respects expectations for Nagisa Oshima's film "Gohatto" were quite high. The director who gave us the infamous "In the Realm of the Senses" returns to his chair behind the camera after a 13 years break and a stroke. The end result is, to put it simply, sobering.

Comments; The title of the latest film by the director of In The Realm Of The Senses translates as "taboo", so you'd expect something shockingly REVIEW: I think most people are looking at the movie from a single perspective. Who loved whom was never really the issue; the movie is overflowing with modernistic themes (as many have already noted) and self-criticism is at the focus of the story. Gohatto. This week's films.

Gohatto A picture of life in a Samurai compound in the Shogun era as an adrogynous young recruit so inflames the passions of his Shinsengumi comrades that some consider death a small price to pay Gohatto is a film which for some will be dismayingly impenetrable, but it is unmistakably the work of a master film-maker and a work of enormous strangeness and charm. The production design, lighting and cinematography combine to fill the screen with shots you want to freeze-frame and admire, while Ryuchi Sakamoto's glacial score adds a light frosting to the confection. Nagisa Oshima's reputation is based on the scandalous Ai No Corrida, which has been called a masterpiece of sexual cinema, made 25 years ago. He went on to direct Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, amongst other lesser works. Gohatto is neither scandalous, nor inspiring. The character of Kano is never explored, neither are his motives. GOHATTO.
